Seeing is believing. And this is exactly what ADAS cameras enable for emerging Advanced Driver Assistance Systems. Gone are the days of drivers using mirrors and windows to understand the driving environment. Now, camera-based technology is used to help both the driver and the vehicle react and respond to the world around them.
ADAS systems rely on cameras to quickly and accurately detect and recognize other vehicles that are slowing or stopped, pedestrians, obstacles, traffic signs, and lane lines, etc. The information captured by ADAS cameras is quickly analyzed by supporting software and used to trigger a response by the vehicle to improve safety – such as automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, driver awake and alert monitoring, steering correction, blind spot alerts, etc.
This feature can help alert you to drive back to the center of your lane if you mistakenly drift, helping to prevent you from being in a crash. This feature relies on roadway markings to operate. It’s designed to help keep you within your lane. If you do drift out of your lane, you’ll receive warnings on your dashboard, hear a sound, or feel your seat or steering wheel vibrate. However, using your turn signal to switch lanes will override the system.
Lane keep assist is an advanced driver-assistance system designed to keep you from unintentionally drifting out of your lane. Lane Keep Assist typically uses a front-facing camera to identify lane markings and will automatically intervene if you drift toward or over the marking without using your turn signal. These systems use steering correction and/or selective braking to nudge you back into your lane.
Forward collision alert scans the road ahead while you drive. It’s designed to warn you if you’re about to crash into a slower moving or stopped vehicle. Sensors located in the front of your car are able to detect how close you are to vehicles in front of you. These typically are camera- or radar-based. Warnings can come in the form of sounds, visuals, vibrations or a quick brake pulse. Or, a mix of warnings.
We were recently contacted by a local customer who said her local insurance agent referred her to an out of town company for a windshield replacement. Her vehicle supported a camera system and after contacting that particular shop, she gave them the info on her vehicle and they came back with a quote of $975.00 for the windshield installation, which automatically included the recalibration charge. Needless to say she was shocked by that price. So she decided to search out another shop and ended up calling us. We gave her a quote and explained that her camera system may not need to be recalibrated and we would know after we replaced the windshield and test drove her car. So she set up the appointment with us, and after replacing her windshield and test driving her car, we determined her camera system was working perfectly and no recalibration was required. Our charge for the windshield replacement was $450.00, which saved her $525.00, more than twice the cost of the replacement!!! Needless to say she was ecstatic with us, not just with our honesty but the money we saved her.
So, the out of town company would have charged her the entire $975.00 whether her car actually needed the recalibration or not, and she would have never known the difference, only relying on trusting the company that she was referred to. This only proves that some shops can take pure advantage of consumers who have these camera systems on their vehicles, which totally opens Pandora's box, directly affecting the consumer!!
Even though her insurance deductible was only $500, we still saved her $50.00 of her out of pocket expense plus we saved her from filing an insurance claim and the insurance company from paying the remaining or additional balance. And she saved a strike against her on her insurance from filing a claim in the process. So the entire situation was a win win!! Insurance companies are takin advantage of all the time which affects everyone's rates across the board. We are just doing our part, by being honest, which is the way it should be but isn't always the case with other shops. We are here to make money, but we do it honestly.
